We met when our churches joined together. It was the first night we had youth group together. I was 15 and he was 17. We were both really shy and that night barely got out a "hello" or "how's it going?"
About a month later, that all changed. We went on a youth retreat and spent 3 hours on a paddle boat together. We became best friends and talked on the phone all the time for hours mostly about nothing.
After the retreat though, I had definitely developed a crush on him and was terrible at hiding it. He told me we could never be more than friends. I was hurt and dated other guys only to eventually stop talking to him and be depressed beyond belief.
After the third guy I dated, I decided I was done. Done with because treated poorly. Done with being hurt. Done with dating just to date. I still had feelings for Ryan at that point but I wasn't going to just bring that up, after all "we can never be more than friends."
My life went downhill and I just didn't care anymore. I didn't talk to anyone anymore, I had called everyone and no one had anything useful to say. I broke down one night and called the one person I never thought would answer, Ryan. He answered his phone while in class and told me he'd call me when he got home.
We talked for what felt like hours, and I said the one thing I had needed to say, "Maybe Mauren was right." She had said that he and I should be together.
Two weeks later, I got a facebook message from Ryan that he had liked me all along, and wouldn't be totally opposed to dating me eventually.
I won't bore you with details, but the next 6 months consisted of a lot of prayer, tears, and falling completely in love. On my 17th birthday, he asked me to be his girlfriend.
I was his first girlfriend, first kiss, and the first girl he ever called cute, beautiful, etc.
The past year and a half have been crazy, emotional, and amazing.
The day after we had been together for a year and a half and the day before Valentine's day, he got down on one knee and had his computer read a poem he wrote since he was too choked up to read it. He asked me to marry him and I said YES!
One year :)
